arrow indicating there is more text to show

Protein shakes and powders are consumed multiple times a day after bariatric surgery. Pre-operative dietary instructions will vary, but most patients need protein shakes starting 2 weeks before surgery and ALL patients will need them for at least 6 weeks after surgery. It's normal to get tired of drinking them. Remember, protein supplements area very important, but only temporary, part of your bariatric journey.  Keep a close eye on your protein intake as volume, variety, and texture increase. After four to six months, most patients can get their protein needs from whole food sources without the need for supplements.

1

Keep several brands of shakes & powders on hand after surgery, your taste may change.

2

Basic flavors to stock: chocolate, vanilla, chicken soup, and unflavored protein powders.

3

Buy different flavors of sugar-free syrups to put in your protein shakes.

4

Remember, it's too hard on the pouch to eat spicy seasonings like cayenne pepper,Tabasco, or hot sauce after surgery.

5

Try Sugar free Da Vinci and Torani brands.

6

Invest in herbs and spices to flavor soups and broths.

7

What's the difference between a pureed and a soft food?

A pureed food is a thickened, almost-liquid mixture that doesn't require chewing. It's made by blending liquid and solid ingredients until they are smooth and creamy.

A soft food is more solid when you place it in your mouth but easily breaks down into a mush-like consistency when chewed.
